Honorary Commissioner, 2011

Festival of the Tartans

Troy MacCulloch

As President of the St. Andrew's Society for Pictou County, it is my pleasure to welcome you all to the 2011 Festival of the Tartans. Over the years this Festival has been the mechanism to encourage and preserve our Scottish Culture and History. The lives of our ancestors both here in Canada and back across the pond, are kept alive through playing of the same tunes, dancing to the same songs and competing in the same games as was done decades and centuries ago.

This Festival is not a chance for Canadians to "act Scottish", quite the contrary. This is an opportunity for both Scottish Canadians and visitors to celebrate their Scottish ancestry, enjoy the music, dance and customs of ages past and continue to strengthen that link and bond to who it is we were, and who we will be into the future.

So come... Ceilidh with us, and I truly hope you enjoy this year's Festival.

Yours aye,

Troy

Welcome from Mayor Barrie MacMillan

Description: Barrie_MacMillan--10ReCrDear Residents and Visitors:

It is my pleasure as Mayor of the Town of New Glasgow to invite you to join us for the 54th annual Festival of the Tartans. As our town's longest running festival, the Festival of the Tartans celebrates and helps preserve the beloved traditions of the pioneer Scots who settled New Glasgow in 1784.

Deacon Thomas Fraser was the first settler to our town while James Carmichael and George Argo established the first trading post, the foundation for New Glasgow's role as a leading commercial service centre for northern Nova Scotia. Carmichael and his brother in law George MacKenzie, known as the father of Nova Scotia shipbuilding, and later James' son James William Carmichael, were very successful shipbuilders, building and launching hundreds of ships along our scenic East River.

I look forward to seeing you at Tartan Field and other venues for the skirl of the pipes, swirl of the kilt, the best in Scottish heavy weight competitions, talented highland dancers, the pageantry of mass pipe bands, the concert under the stars, golfing and much more.

While in New Glasgow, I hope visitors will enjoy warm hospitality and make many fond memories. Enjoy amenities such as our performing arts centres, Glasgow Square Theatre and the Celtic Circle, the beautiful Samson Trail, Carmichael Stewart House Museum, Downtown New Glasgow and the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame as well as some charming restaurants and unique shops.

And be sure to check out the genealogical records at the New Glasgow Library. We have great staff and wonderful volunteers with the Pictou County Roots Society who will help you trace your family tree. And beside the library is a little piece of Scottish land, dedicated to our namesake city, Glasgow, Scotland.

Congratulations to Festival President Brenda MacKay, Festival Directors and to all volunteers and sponsors for their continued dedication and support of this signature home town event for New Glasgow.

Welcome from Festival President Brenda MacKay:

As President of the Festival of the Tartans and Highland Games, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our event!

I am very proud to be part of a committee with dedicated volunteers who cherish and celebrate the Scottish heritage and culture.  The committee works tirelessly year round to ensure we encompass the essence of this historic tradition during the week’s activities.

Be sure to embrace the events taking place throughout the week that showcase these Scottish traditions such as the Kilted Golf Tournament, Highland Dancing, Heavyweight Demonstrations, and of course the Pipes and Drums.

Our committee is very excited to welcome Rawlins Cross as well as Fleur Mainville & John Spyder MacDonald as our entertainment for the Concert under the Stars on Saturday evening. It is a great night for the whole family to enjoy.

I have no doubt this week will present a fun, cultural experience to be enjoyed by not only the Scottish, but the Scottish at heart!

Welcome to one and all!
