The SANDY MacLEAN Memorial Trophy

Presented to a Piper who exhibits great potential and exemplifies a love and appreciation of the Scottish Tradition at the annual New Glasgow Festival Of The Tartans.

Sandy MacLean was Chair of the Festival of the Tartans for several years and was a pipe major for Cadet Corp 219 during his youth. He always took special interest in young piping talent, particularly during the Festival, and always wanted to encourage our young Pictou County pipers - seeing the Festival of the Tartans as a great venue for them to perform and hone their skills. He had a deep love for the culture and traditions of his Scottish roots.

Brittany MacFarlane is the 12 yr old (2010) daughter of Kim & Debbie MacFarlane of Stellarton. She is a Grade 7 student at G R Saunders School where this year (2010) she won the best all-around student award.

Brittany fell in love with the bagpipes early in life. She approached Madelyn Langlois, who was her primary teacher, to teach her how to play the pipes. Madelyn measured her fingers and told her she would need to grow a bit before she would be able to play. Every week afterwards she would ask Madelyn to measure her fingers to see if she had grown enough to be taught. Brittany began chanter lessons at age 8 and competed in chanter class for 2 years, placing first in numerous competitions which led her to being presented the Atlantic Canada Pipe Band Association 2009 Championship Supreme for practice chanter.

Brittany started on pipes in 2009 and has excelled once again placing first in numerous competitions in 2010. In June 2010 she won the ACPBA Piobaireachd Challenge Pewter Medal and was awarded the Scott Williams Piobaireachd challenge Cup and a black wood chanter.

Brittany has completed a week at the Gaelic College in At. Ann’s Cape Breton to further her piping skills. She enjoys volunteering for community events including the opening of the Allan Park by Communities in Bloom, children’s parades, G.R. Saunders remembrances day ceremony, the Olympic Torch Run and a concert at Glen Haven Manor. Brittany is a valued member of the Clan Thompson Pipe Band.
